We now have a 48-year-old lifetime member of the US Supreme Court, one of the nine most important individuals in the country.
The Court's slip to the right has become an avalanche, with three new members having been nominated by Donald Trump after contentious hearing processes.
Does this mean that all decisions supported by the Democrats will be overturned, not necessarily?
Of late Justice Gorsuch and Roberts have voted with the liberals and, it seems to me, have demonstrated independence, they were not in lock-step with the President, much to his disgust.
Amy Barrett's educational, professional and personal bona fides are rock solid and she performed well during the nomination hearings. There were complaints that she dodged specifics but in all fairness, the Ginsburg Rule, "No Hints, No Forecasts, no Previews", has been followed by previous nominees, conservative and liberal alike. It can be argued that Ginsburg had been more forthcoming with her answers than Barrett but, as this blog has opined in the past, it depends upon context.
I have every reason to be a supporter of Amy Barrett, I'm a Catholic, a Notre Dame alumni, the father of 4 children, and grandfather of 7. I'm ambivalent about "choice" but tend to agree with my deceased father-in-law, he was unequivocal in his position that the government should not legislate morals.
Abortion is a moral issue and should be decided by the individual. Personally, albeit I'm not a woman, I believe that choice is a personal decision, and should not be subject to the law.
The other hot-button issue that Barrett was pushed on was the Affordable Care Act, aka O'Bama Care. She wouldn't commit while using the Ginsburg Rule.
So, how will Justice Barrett comport herself on the court? Will she be a Trump pawn and legislate from the bench or will she follow the law regardless of where it leads? I tend to think the latter but only time will tell.
Be who you were educated and trained to be Justice Barrett, the country, and the law demand it.
